Design Thinking (CRITICAL — do this BEFORE any code)
Before writing a single line of code, commit to a BOLD aesthetic direction:
- Check lessons: If
docs/review_lessons.md exists, scan for recurring UI/UX issues to avoid in this design.
- Purpose: What problem does this interface solve? Who uses it?
- Tone: Commit to a distinct direction — brutally minimal, maximalist chaos, retro-futuristic, organic/natural, luxury/refined, playful/toy-like, editorial/magazine, brutalist/raw, art deco/geometric, soft/pastel, industrial/utilitarian, dark/moody, lo-fi/zine, handcrafted/artisanal. Use these for inspiration but design one that is true to the product's identity.
- Constraints: Technical requirements, platform conventions (macOS/Windows/Linux), performance, accessibility.
- Differentiation: What makes this UNFORGETTABLE? What's the one thing someone will remember?
Desktop-Specific Design Lens
- Information density: How does the interface leverage the large screen? Is this a spacious single-focus tool or a dense multi-panel dashboard? How much information is visible at once without scrolling?
- Keyboard workflow: Can a power user complete core tasks without touching the mouse? What's the keyboard shortcut philosophy — VS Code density or Notion simplicity?
- Multi-window experience: Does the app benefit from multiple windows? What opens in a new window vs a panel? How do windows communicate?
- OS citizenship: Does the app feel like a native citizen of the OS? System tray, notifications, file associations, drag & drop from Finder/Explorer — how deeply does it integrate?
Bold maximalism and refined minimalism both work — the key is intentionality, not intensity.
Interview-Driven Direction
The Design Interview answers are HARD CONSTRAINTS, not suggestions:
- Brand Personality metaphor → drives typography weight, spacing density, animation energy
- Emotional Target → drives color temperature, whitespace ratio, transition speed
- Anti-Reference → explicit exclusion list checked against every design decision
- Aspiration Reference → research and extract 3-5 concrete visual cues
- Desktop Identity → drives native integration depth vs branded UI independence
If the user skips the interview entirely:
- Auto-derive constraints from PRD: infer Brand Personality from user personas, Emotional Target from core value proposition, Anti-Reference from competitor analysis, Desktop Identity from product type.
- Present derivations for user confirmation before proceeding.
- Treat auto-derived values as soft constraints (open to deviation) vs user-provided values which are hard constraints.
Reference Research Protocol
Before committing to an aesthetic direction:
- WebSearch the aspiration reference's UI/design
- WebSearch the anti-reference to understand patterns to avoid
- WebSearch "[product domain] desktop app design trends" for domain context
- Synthesize into concrete Adopt/Avoid lists in design_philosophy.md
Desktop Aesthetics (Anti-AI-Slop)
NEVER use generic, personality-free desktop defaults:
- NEVER: A web app wrapped in Electron that feels like a browser tab in a frame
- NEVER: Touch-target-sized buttons (48px) that waste desktop screen real estate
- NEVER: Mobile hamburger menu on a desktop app (you have a menu bar and sidebar)
- NEVER: Pro tools without keyboard shortcuts
- NEVER: Ignoring the system menu bar with only custom in-app menus
- NEVER: Single-window-only design when content naturally benefits from multi-window
- NEVER: Ignoring OS theme preferences (light/dark mode)
- NEVER: Generic placeholder illustrations for empty states
- NEVER: Uniform padding on all panels without hierarchy
INSTEAD:
Typography (deep)
- System font strategy: SF Pro (macOS), Segoe UI (Windows), Ubuntu/Cantarell (Linux) ARE acceptable when used with INTENTION — custom weights, deliberate tracking, expressive sizing.
- Custom font option: When the product personality demands it, use custom fonts with proper loading.
- Typographic scale: Wider modular scale than mobile (1.25 or 1.333 ratio) — large screens can afford dramatic jumps between heading and body.
- Weight exploitation: Use the full weight range (300–900). Headlines at 700–900, body at 400, UI labels at 500–600, metadata/secondary at 300.
- Minimum size: 12px is acceptable on desktop (vs 14px mobile minimum). Metadata, timestamps, and status text can be smaller.
- Monospace: Use monospace fonts for code, data, keyboard shortcuts, and technical content. Pick one that matches the aesthetic (JetBrains Mono, Fira Code, SF Mono, Cascadia Code).
- CJK/Korean considerations: Korean text needs more line-height (1.6–1.8 vs 1.4–1.5 for Latin).
Color & Theme
- Commit to a cohesive palette expressed as TypeScript token objects AND CSS custom properties. Dominant colors with sharp accents outperform timid, evenly-distributed palettes.
- Long session optimization: Desktop apps are used for hours. Colors must minimize eye strain — avoid pure white backgrounds in light mode, prefer slightly warm or cool off-whites.
- Strong dark mode: True dark mode is table stakes for desktop apps.
nativeTheme integration for automatic switching. Manual override for user preference.
- OS accent color: Consider integrating the OS accent color for selection highlights and primary actions (via
systemPreferences.getAccentColor() on macOS).
Motion & Interaction (deep)
- Motion philosophy: Desktop motion is FASTER and more RESTRAINED than web or mobile. Users are efficiency-focused — animations must never feel like they're slowing the workflow.
- Duration rules (desktop — faster than web, faster than mobile):
- Micro (hover feedback, toggle): 60–100ms
- Small (menu open, tooltip appear): 120–180ms
- Medium (panel expand, dialog enter): 200–300ms
- Large (window transition, complex state change): 300–500ms
- NEVER exceed 700ms for any single animation
- Easing: Use CSS easing or spring curves.
ease-out for entrances, ease-in for exits, ease-in-out for state changes.
- Hover states: Desktop has hover — USE IT. Hover reveals additional actions, shows tooltips, highlights interactive areas. This is a major differentiator from mobile.
- Reduced motion: Always respect
prefers-reduced-motion — replace animations with instant state changes, keep opacity transitions only.
- Performance: CSS transitions and
transform/opacity animations only. Never animate layout properties (width, height, top, left) — use transforms instead.
will-change discipline: Apply will-change only to elements that ARE about to animate (e.g., on mouseenter), remove after animation ends. NEVER leave will-change permanently on more than 5 elements — each one reserves a GPU compositor layer and increases memory.
- CSS containment: Apply
contain: layout style paint to independently-updating panels (sidebar, content area, detail panel). This limits the browser's repaint scope and prevents cross-panel layout thrashing.
- SplitPane resize: Prefer CSS flexbox/grid
fr units driven by a single CSS custom property over JS-driven width mutations. If JS-driven, wrap in requestAnimationFrame and avoid reading layout (e.g., getBoundingClientRect) in the same frame as writing.
Spatial Composition
- Three-panel layout: Sidebar + Content + Detail Panel is the workhorse layout for productivity apps. Make all panels resizable.
- Information hierarchy: Use panel depth (background color lightness) to create visual hierarchy. Sidebar slightly darker, content area default, detail panel slightly lighter (or vice versa).
- Window chrome: Custom title bar that integrates with macOS traffic lights and Windows window controls. Draggable regions clearly defined. Frameless or semi-frameless for modern feel.
- Status bar: Bottom status bar for app state, sync status, connection info, quick toggles. Smaller text, high density.
- Dense but readable: Desktop users expect more information per screen than mobile users. Use smaller spacing, smaller text, and multi-column layouts — but maintain clear visual hierarchy.
- Cold start choreography: Splash window (lightweight, branded) → main window skeleton → data hydration → interactive. The splash window is a separate, minimal BrowserWindow with no heavy webPreferences — it appears instantly while the main renderer boots. Target: first paint <1s, fully interactive <3s.
Keyboard (deep)
- Shortcut philosophy: Every primary action has a keyboard shortcut. Secondary actions accessible via Command Palette.
- Command Palette (Cmd+K / Ctrl+K): Fuzzy search over all actions, recent items, navigation targets. This is the MOST IMPORTANT keyboard feature.
- Platform modifiers:
Cmd on macOS, Ctrl on Windows/Linux. Always show the correct modifier for the current platform.
- Focus management: Tab moves between panels/sections (not individual items). Arrow keys navigate within a list/table/tree. Enter activates. Escape closes/cancels.
- Focus indicators: Visible focus rings on all interactive elements. Custom-styled to match the aesthetic, not browser defaults.
Prototype Quality Rules (CRITICAL)
These rules ensure the Electron prototype is runnable and production-grade, not just visual scaffolding.
1. Electron Project Setup (MUST follow exactly)
Every prototype MUST be a valid, immediately-runnable Electron project:

backgroundThrottling: true (default) on auxiliary windows. Only disable for windows requiring real-time updates (e.g., live preview).

2. Zero Hardcoded Styles
- NEVER use raw color hex codes, pixel values, or font sizes in screen/component files
- ALL visual values MUST come from
src/theme/ imports (colors.ts, spacing.ts, typography.ts, tokens.ts)
- Exception: layout-structural values like
flex: 1, position: 'absolute', percentage widths, CSS Grid definitions
3. All States Per Screen
Every screen MUST implement all applicable states from the wireframes:
- Default: normal content display
- Loading: skeleton placeholders or spinner (NOT blank screen)
- Empty: illustration + message + CTA from copy guide
- Error: error message + retry action
- Keyboard-focused: visible focus indicators, shortcut hints visible
4. Keyboard Navigation Required
- Every interactive element MUST be keyboard-accessible
- Tab order MUST be logical (left-to-right, top-to-bottom within panels)
- Command Palette MUST be implemented if specified in design system
- At least 5 keyboard shortcuts from interaction spec MUST be functional
- Focus indicators MUST be visible and styled to match the aesthetic
5. Complete Component Specs
- Text Input: focus state, error state, placeholder styling, character count — MUST be specced in design system, not left to defaults
- Data Table: sortable headers, row selection (single/multi), keyboard navigation (arrow keys), virtual scrolling for large datasets
- Context Menu: right-click activation, keyboard activation (Shift+F10), nested submenus, keyboard shortcut hints
- Split Pane: drag-to-resize, min/max constraints, collapse/expand, keyboard resize
- Every interactive element MUST have an
aria-label and role
6. Performance (CRITICAL for Electron apps)
React rendering:
React.memo on list/table item components
useCallback for event handlers passed to memoized children
- Virtual scrolling for lists/tables with 100+ items (react-window or tanstack-virtual)
React.lazy + Suspense for secondary screens, settings panels, and heavy components (code splitting)
IPC performance:
- All renderer→main IPC calls go through a single typed API layer (exposed via preload). No scattered
ipcRenderer.invoke calls in components.
- Batch rapid-fire IPC calls: debounce window resize, scroll position, drag events (max 1 call per 16ms / animation frame)
- NEVER send large objects (>100KB) over IPC — structured clone overhead is significant. Use chunked transfer, file paths, or
MessagePort for streams.
- Prefer
ipcRenderer.invoke (async, returns result) over send/on pairs (harder to track, no backpressure).
Memory management:
- All
useEffect hooks MUST return cleanup functions for: event listeners, IPC subscriptions, setTimeout/setInterval, IntersectionObserver/ResizeObserver
- Use
AbortController for fetch calls to cancel on unmount
- Avoid closures that capture large state objects — prefer refs for mutable values accessed in callbacks
- Monitor for detached DOM nodes: components that create portals (modals, context menus, toasts) MUST clean up portal containers on unmount
Bundle optimization:

- Prototype runnability: Does

Guidelines
- Always read the PRD and existing UX spec first before generating anything.
- Every interactive element must have hover, active, focus, and disabled states. Hover IS a core state for desktop.
- Accessibility: aria-label, role, keyboard navigation, focus management, screen reader support, high contrast mode.
- Realistic placeholder content — domain-appropriate text, not lorem ipsum.
- State assumptions clearly when the PRD is ambiguous — do NOT invent requirements.
- Match implementation complexity to the aesthetic vision: maximalist designs need elaborate multi-panel layouts; minimalist designs need precision spacing and subtle hover effects.
- Platform conventions: respect macOS Human Interface Guidelines, Windows Design Language, and GNOME HIG, but don't be enslaved by them — intentional deviation is fine if it serves the product's identity.
- Multi-platform by default: every decision must work on macOS, Windows, and Linux. Use platform tokens for differences.
