This skill should be used when creating Daggerheart adversaries, building stat blocks, designing encounters, or determining enemy difficulty. Invoke when the GM needs to create enemies, generate adversary stat blocks, calculate Battle Points for encounter balance, or reference adversary types (Bruiser, Horde, Leader, Minion, Ranged, Skulk, Social, Solo, Standard, Support).
This skill inherits all available tools. When active, it can use any tool Claude has access to.

Daggerheart uses 10 adversary types that define combat role and behavior:
Heavy-hitting melee combatants with high damage output and significant HP. They close distance and deal Major/Severe threshold damage consistently.
Swarm-type adversaries that gain strength in numbers. Individual members are weak, but together they overwhelm through quantity.
Command-focused adversaries that enhance other enemies. They buff allies, coordinate attacks, and present priority target dilemmas.
Expendable low-threat adversaries that die quickly but add action economy. Used to pad encounters and create tactical choices.
Distance attackers who stay out of melee and punish exposed targets. They force movement and positioning decisions.
Stealth-focused adversaries who strike from hiding and avoid direct confrontation. They use ambush tactics and escape abilities.
Non-combat focused adversaries who present challenges through dialogue, manipulation, or social pressure. Combat is their weakness.
Powerful singular adversaries designed to challenge an entire party alone. They have multiple actions and legendary-style abilities.
Baseline adversaries that represent typical threats. They have balanced stats and straightforward abilities.
Adversaries that enhance allies through healing, buffs, or battlefield control. They don't deal much damage but multiply threat.
Adversary Tier indicates overall power level and corresponds to PC levels:
| Tier | PC Levels | Difficulty | Attack Mod |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Level 1 | 11 | +1 |
| 2 | Levels 2-4 | 14 | +2 |
| 3 | Levels 5-7 | 17 | +3 |
| 4 | Levels 8-10 | 20 | +4 |
Determine the adversary's narrative role:
Select Tier based on party level and desired threat. Select Type based on combat role.
Tier Guidelines:
Use these SRD benchmarks based on Tier:
| Tier | Difficulty | Major | Severe | Attack Mod | Damage Dice |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 11 | 7 | 12 | +1 | 1d6+2 to 1d12+4 |
| 2 | 14 | 10 | 20 | +2 | 2d6+3 to 2d12+4 |
| 3 | 17 | 20 | 32 | +3 | 3d8+3 to 3d12+5 |
| 4 | 20 | 25 | 45 | +4 | 4d8+10 to 4d12+15 |
Every adversary needs at least one attack:

Check that the adversary fits your encounter budget using the Battle Points formula (see references/encounter-building.md).

Use the Battle Points formula for balanced encounters:
Battle Points = (3 x Number of PCs) + 2
| Battle Points | Adversary Type |
|---|---|
| 1 | Group of Minions equal to party size |
| 1 | Social or Support |
| 2 | Horde, Ranged, Skulk, or Standard |
| 3 | Leader |
| 4 | Bruiser |
| 5 | Solo |
| Adjustment | Condition |
|---|---|
| -1 | Easier or shorter fight |
| -2 | Using 2+ Solo adversaries |
| -2 | Adding +1d4 (or +2) to all adversary damage |
| +1 | Adversary from a lower tier |
| +1 | No Bruisers, Hordes, Leaders, or Solos |
| +2 | Harder or longer fight |
